The bowlers laid the foundation for Chennai’s victory. Hazlewood took three wickets for 24 runs which is his best performance in IPL. Bravo took two wickets for 17 runs. Wriddhiman Saha scored 44 runs for Sunrisers but for this, he played 46 balls. The Chennai batsmen channeled the efforts of the bowlers well. Ruturaj Gaikwad (45 off 38 balls) and Faf du Plessis (41 off 36 balls) got the team off to a good start by adding 75 runs for the first wicket. Ambati Rayudu remained unbeaten on 17 while Dhoni (14 not out from 11 balls) hit the winning six in his familiar style.
Chennai is the first team to reach the playoffs this season. He entered the playoffs for the 11th time in 12 IPLs. Like Sunrisers, Chennai too got off to a slow start but did not lose wickets. After the first three overs, the score was 12 runs. In the fourth over of Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s innings, both Gaikwad and Du Plessis hit sixes. Du Plessis hit two fours on the holder while Gaikwad welcomed Rashid with fours and sixes. He was given out leg before in the same over but with the help of DRS, he remained at the crease. Till the powerplay, the score was 47 runs. After this, when Siddharth Kaul came to bowl, Duplessis hit him for six and four. This partnership was broken in the 11th over by Jason Holder (3 for 27) by getting Gaikwad caught at mid-off. He hit four fours and two sixes in his innings.
