Like Delta, cases of infection from Delta Plus have also been first found in India. According to the Union Health Ministry, 22 cases of Delta Plus variant have been reported in India, of which 16 are in Jalgaon and Ratnagiri in Maharashtra. Rest of the cases are in Kerala and Madhya Pradesh. Infected patients have been found in Palakkad and Pathanamthitta in Kerala while Bhopal and Shivpuri districts of MP. How was the Delta Plus variant detected in India?
The Indian SARS Cove-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG) detected the delta plus variant during genome sequencing of samples. The Indian SARS CoV-2 Genomics Consortium is a group of laboratories which was set up by the government on 25 December last year. INSACOG has since been sequencing the genome of the coronavirus and analyzing the virus and tracing the new forms of the virus thus found and their relationship to the pandemic. It has done gene sequencing of more than 45 thousand samples so far.
