New AI system may help detect prostate cancer

New AI system may help detect prostate cancer, Researchers have developed a new artificial intelligence (AI) system to help radiologists improve their ability to diagnose prostate cancer. A system named FocalNet helps to identify and predict the aggression of disease by evaluating magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans and does this with an almost identical level of accuracy in the form of an experienced radiologist.

FocalNet is an artificial neural network in which an algorithm is used, in which according to the researchers, more than a million trainable variables including Ruiming Cao from the University of California, Los Angeles. For a study published in Journal IEEE Transactions on Medical Imaging, the team trained the system by analyzing the MRI scan of 417 men with prostate cancer. Helping to assess and classify tumors in a consistent way, and then scanned into the system to help in learning the results of the actual pathology samples.

The team compared the system’s results with more than 10 years of experience with reading through the UCLA radiologist.

The findings showed that the AI system was 80.5 percent accurate in reading MRI, while the UCLA radiologist was 83.9 percent accurate.

New AI system may help detect prostate cancer, Radiologists use MRI to detect and assess the malignant prostate tumor aggression. But it usually exercises on thousands of scans to determine how it can be determined correctly that the tumor is cancerous or benign and to make a correct estimate of the cancer grade, the team said.

Research shows that an artificial intelligence system can save time and provide diagnostic guidance to a potentially less experienced radiologist.

During the testing of the new system, the results were impressive. An analysis of MRI scan of 417 men with prostate cancer was done by the FocalNet. The study was published in the IEEE Transactions on Medical Imaging which stated that the FocalNet 80.5% was accurate in reading MRI, whereas the radiologist with at least 10 years of experience was 83.9% accurate. During manual detection with MRI, there are thousands of tests to determine if tumors are cancer and what is the grade of cancer. But the FocalNet uses an algorithm that contains millions of trainable variables. This is a neural network.

In the end, researchers compared the results of new AI systems with readings by radiologists, who had more than 10 years of experience. The research concludes that the new system can save time and give accurate results at the same time.
